Urn capacity is usually listed in cubic inches. A widely used rule of thumb is one cubic inch of capacity per pound of body weight before death. For example, a person who weighed 180 pounds would typically need an urn of at least about 180 cubic inches. Many standard adult urns hold about 200 cubic inches.

These are typical figures, not fixed standards. Always check the capacity the maker lists. The volume of cremated remains depends mostly on bone structure and height rather than weight alone, so a tall person may need more capacity than the rule suggests. If you’re unsure, ask the crematory and choose a slightly larger urn.
Other things to check
- Niche size. If the urn will go in a columbarium niche, get the interior dimensions first.
- Cemetery rules. Some cemeteries require an urn vault for burial.
- Air travel. Urns carried on flights must be screened. Ask the airline and TSA about requirements before you travel.
- Dividing remains. If family members will share the remains, plan a main urn plus keepsakes.
